Updated: Saturday 11th September 2010Dear Friends, The music, dancing and hubbub of the people has died down. The smoke of dozens of cooking fires has cleared. The members of the preaching team have made their way home and it is all so still here at Fiwale Hill in Zambia. Quite a contrast to few days ago when more than 2000 people gathered for the Sacred Assembly of the Northern Baptist Association of Zambia. It seems quite strange that something into which we have prayed for over 12 months is now part of history. But it was a great time of blessing and the hand of God in the lives of many, many people. We commenced last Tuesday evening (31st August) with a gathering of pastors and senior leaders. For the next two days the team spoke into the lives of these men and women. For two days we imparted life and encouragement into them. They were challenged at the level of their own walk with God, their leadership and their ministry as a whole. We shared a half night of prayer as Pastor Silas Tayebwa from Uganda led us through. Such an extended time of prayer and associated fasting was something quite new for many of the participants. Then Thursday afternoon the tidal wave of people commenced. Trucks, pickups and minibuses unloaded scores of people, their meagre belongings and food for the next few days. Before long scattered cooking fires were preparing the evening meal for the hungry travellers. (We will put some photos on the website.) Then the business of the Assembly got underway with the first rally on Thursday night. Gavin preached the first service on the theme of Gathering in Sacred Assembly and challenged the people to open their hearts to a fresh move of God in the coming days. Through Friday, Saturday and Sunday the team ministered. Pastor Brian Hine (Sandgate Baptist Church, Brisbane), Pastors Silas and Nicola Tayebwa (King of Kings Church, Mbarara, Uganda) and Gavin and Glenda all shared the preaching and teaching ministry. Every session was well attended and received enthusiastically by the assembled crowd. Meanwhile back in the guesthouse, our hostess Joy Welsh made sure that the inner man was well fed and Trevor Welsh attended to the inevitable infrastructure breakdowns. One particular highlight was the Friday night rally where Pastor Silas Tayebwa preached up a storm. Before he even finished his address, demons began to manifest in people and they were carried screaming and squirming to the front of the assembly. They were soon joined by hundreds of people seeking prayer ministry for every kind of need. More than 80 people (mostly young people) responded to an invitation to give their lives to Christ. Both Friday and Saturday nights we were up until very late praying for people. Many later gave testimony of miraculous healings, powerful deliverance and other answered prayer. Pastor Nicola Tayebwa was particularly well received. The churches of the Northern Baptist Association of Zambia are unfamiliar with lady pastors, so she was quite a novelty, especially as one of European heritage married to an African. They soon discovered that Nicola is a powerfully anointed woman of God with a penetrating and challenging message. The Lord powerfully touched many lives through her ministry and encouraged the women of the Association to move more into their calling in Christ. Pastor Brian’s gentle nature and penetrating message also won him great favour with the people and the leaders. People loved the heartfelt simplicity of his messages and the authority with which he spoke. It was powerful impartation that came straight from his heart. Glenda spoke to the assembled women at two afternoon sessions on Friday and Saturday while other members of the team ministered to separate groups of men and young people. The Sacred Assembly concluded early Sunday afternoon after a marathon three and a half hour service. Gavin preached the final message challenging the people to keep the fire of the Spirit burning and not to allow the regular things of life to take away from what God has been doing among them. How do we sum up what has happened? Was it revival? While we did not experience tongues of fire resting on people’s heads or rushing mighty winds, God was certainly doing a reviving and renewing work in the lives of many, many people. Many people received a fresh touch of the Lord and a personal revival in their souls. Association leaders spoke of this as the most significant and spiritually challenging gathering in memory. The church was exposed to a style and dynamic of ministry few have experienced previously. Senior spiritual leaders including Lamba tribal Senior Chief Mushili excitedly supported every aspect of the Assembly by their presence and verbal encouragement to us and to the people. It was a most powerful and refreshing time for all involved. Now life around Fiwale Hill has returned to its usual pace. Gavin is working with Pastor Jack Kayambwe to lay the foundations for the School of Leadership Development scheduled to commence in March next year. Glenda has managed to borrow a sewing machine and in between power outages, she is sewing a new set of curtains for the guesthouse which is our home during visits here. Some of the curtains in the guest house Glenda made when we were missionaries here more than 30 years ago. We have another week here before we make our way to Uganda for the next phase of the journey. WORK PARTY: We will be returning to Zambia regularly next year as we develop the School of Leadership Development. We would very much like to bring folk who can contribute practically to the needs around Fiwale Hill Mission. Most urgent are an Electrician and offsider, a plumber and a mechanic. If you know anyone with these skills who might be interested in coming with us to help, we would love to talk to them. We will be returning to Zambia in mid-February for a month and that would be a great time to come with us for this practical ministry assignment. We want to say a special thank you to everyone who has contributed financially, practically and prayerfully to this time. Your participation was part of making it all happen. We know that the blessing and refreshing of these days will impact the church for a long time to come. Thanks for being part of it with us. In Christ, Gavin and Glenda
